Invitation to prayer

- Practices on the Buddhist path, Tarthang Tulku

The invitation toward prayer seems to be nearly universal in human consciousness. Our sense of the sacred allows us to transcend ordinary thoughts and concerns. We approach with respect and humility the places we identify as sacred. We reach out to touch the ineffable, to stand in the presence of the sacred or transcend beyond our limited sense of self. This reaching out to something akin to us, yet much vaster is the very heart of prayer.

The blessings of the prayers are never withheld because of human limitations.

Their mercy and compassion are always present, just as the sun always shines. To receive the blessings of the prayers we need only to remove the clouds that obscure our own enlightened nature and open our hearts in prayer.

Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace

– St. Francis Assisi

Make me an instrument of thy peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon.
Where there is discord, vision.
Where there is doubt, faith.
Where there is despite, hope.
Where there is darkness, light.
Where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we are receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are borne to eternal life.

Seek peace and pursue it

– The old Hillel

Hillel said:
Be of the disciple of Aaron
Loving peace
And pursuing peace
Loving your fellow creatures
And bringing them close to the Torah.

Hillel said:
That which is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbour. That is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation. Go and study it.

Leviticus, 19:18

One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself.

Psalm 34

13 Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.
14 Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.

The Four Immeasurable

May all sentient beings possess happiness and the causes of happiness (training of love)
May all sentient beings be free of suffering and causes of suffering (training of compassion)
May all sentient beings never be separated from happiness and free of suffering (training of joy)
May all sentient beings possess equanimity that does not discriminate between the near and the dear and the distant and disliked (training of equanimity)

Spread the greeting of Peace

– Book of Iman

Said the Messenger of Allah
May the prayer of Allah and His blessing descend upon him;
You shall not enter paradise until you believe
You shall not believe until you love one another
Shall I guide you to a thing which if you do, You shall love each other?
Spread Salam – the greeting of Peace – among you!

Lord of Peace

– Introduction by Avi Elqayam

They who truly wish to pray for peace, from the bottom of their hearts, they must repair themselves, purify their souls. Peace is the utmost expression of the absolute wholeness. Thus, inner striving for peace is to overcome evil, to overcome what is lacking and achieve wholeness and take part in making the creation whole.

Those who truly seek peace are invited to transcend all walls in their minds which separate the different religions and offer with pure hearts the prayers for peace of other religions. By this means, they will cleave the roots of their souls to the essence of the inner peace, peace with no barriers between religions, nations, races and genders.

May I be at peace

– Saint Teresa of Avila

May I be at peace.
May my heart remain open.
May I be aware of my true nature.
May I be healed
May I be a source of healing for others.
May I dwell in the breath of God.

The fruit of service is peace – Mother Teresa of Kolkata

The fruit of silence is prayer
The fruit of prayer is faith
The fruit of faith is love
The fruit of love is service
The fruit of service is peace.

Vision of the last day

– The prophet Isaiah

And He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide for many people; and they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nations shall not lift up swords against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.

For ye shall go out with joy, and will be led forth with peace; the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.

The way of the Bodhisattva

– Shantideva

All those who are unhappy in the world are so because of their desire for their own happiness.
All those who are happy in the world are so because of their desire for the happiness of others.

How wonderful will it be when all beings experience each other as limbs on the one body of life.

May I become at all times, both now and forever: a protector for those without protection; a guide for those who have lost their way; a ship for those with oceans to cross; a bridge for those with rivers to cross; a sanctuary for those in danger; a lamp for those without light; a place of refuge for those who lack shelter; and a servant to all in need.

O God! Set light in my heart

– Al Ghazarli

O God!
Set a light in my heart
And a light in my tongue
Set a light in my ear
And a light in my eye
A light behind me; and a light in front of me
And a light above me
O God!
Give me light.
